The reception is a bamboo bridge over flowing water followed by a brief uphill climb, opening up to a patio that overlooks lush greenery. The maze-like corridors of the retreat are lined with bamboo; its walls the product of the fresh forest that dwarfed the villagestay.
On our last day, we were led by Pineapple Andy, the caretaker, into the forest. He brought us through paths on the hills that offered many a breathtaking view—some twenty minutes out to the great Mabir Waterfall. After some much needed cooling off, Andy brought the group to the nearby treasure trove of bamboo: a plant that we had recently learned played a significant role in Bidayuh practices.
B.B. residents toted on their shoulders home the result of a close dissection of bamboo gathering: the picking, cutting, and precautionary measures involved therein. Watch the video here.
