Many dangerous illnesses are prevalent in Borneo and several vaccines are recommended before you travel. For most short-term travellers the usual recommended vaccinations for Borneo include cover against the childhood diseases (Tetanus and Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps and Rubella), as well as cover against the food and water borne diseases of Typhoid and Hepatitis A. For those trekking in Borneo or staying for longer periods then cover against Hepatitis B and Rabies should be considered. Malaria Prophylaxis may need to be considered depending on your itinerary.
Even if you’re fit and healthy, we don’t recommend travelling without health insurance. Extra cover may be required for adventure activities such as rock climbing, caving or diving. If you’re uninsured, emergency evacuation can be expensive.
Highly recommended:
- Viral hepatitis A and B.
- Tetanus, diphtheria and polio.
Recommended if you stay in rural areas, within Borneo or near the Indonesian border:
- Typhoid
- Poliomyelitis Tuberculosis
- Rage
Diseases caused by mosquitoes: most tourists visiting Borneo and staying along the coastal regions will not require malaria prophylaxis but for those planning visiting the jungle then the risk increases and so the malaria protection tablets would usually be recommended. Also some of the mosquito borne diseases may be more common away from the coast (e.g. Japanese Encephalitis) though Dengue Fever is still a problem throughout the island and mosquito avoidance techniques should always be followed.
- Anti-malaria pills for circuits in rural areas If you are staying in the city or on the coast, treatment is not necessary. However, if you plan to travel inland and spend several days in the jungle, prevention may be necessary.
- Japanese encephalitis: few cases in Sarawak following the start of the rainy season. Vaccination is recommended for all visitors staying in rural areas.
- Dengue: still a problem on the island of Borneo. No specific treatment available Therefore, you must protect yourself from mosquito bites.
- In order to avoid getting mosquito bites, get a strong mosquitoes repellant, choose pants and long-sleeved t-shirts when you’re in the jungle or at night Feel free to use a mosquito net if you sleep there.
